The Exhibition of Guide Dogs, organized by the ONCE, in collaboration with the Molina de Segura City Council, took place today, Thursday, May 17, in the Plaza de España.
The Mayor of Molina de Segura, Esther Clavero Mira, the General Director of Persons with Disabilities of the Region of Murcia, Ana Guijarro Martínez, the Territorial Delegate of the ONCE in Murcia, Juan Carlos Morejón de Girón Bascuñana, the President of the Council Territorial of the ONCE in Murcia, Teresa Lajarín Ortega, the Director of the Agency of the ONCE in Molina de Segura, Nuria Vidal Carpio, and the President of the Association of Dog Users Guide of the Region of Murcia, María Dolores García Ayala, among others.
The exhibition of guide dogs of the ONCE has shown how blind people who use these animals gain security, autonomy and mobility in their travels through any public or public place.
Attendees have been able to see first hand the different stages through which a dog crosses to become a guide for a blind person and how, after intensive training, these dogs are able to improve the autonomy, mobility and safety of these people.
The exhibition has been carried out by members of the ONCE Foundation of the Guide Dog, an institution that in its 28 years of history has provided more than 2,500 dogs to people who are blind or visually impaired, and who have turned these animals into a neighbor next to the citizens.
At present the Region of Murcia has 26 active guide dogs.
Guide dogs are trained to avoid fixed and mobile obstacles;
notify the user of crosses and steps;
look for pedestrian crossings, entrances and exits of all type of establishments and even locate stairs or bus stops.
The most used breeds are Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd and Flat Coated Retriever.
The laws recognize the right of users to walk and stay, accompanied by their guide dog, in public transport and places or public use.
History
The ONCE has as one of its maxims the integration of blind people in society.
Employment, social and cultural relations and personal autonomy are the pillars on which this integration is based.
In an increasingly complex environment, the need to move with independence and security forces blind people to bet more and more on an agile and reliable solution: the guide dog.
He treasures a careful training that makes him the best mobility tool of a blind person and gives him the mission to become the eyes of those who can not see.
For this reason, the ONCE created the ONCE Foundation of the Guide Dog (FOPG) on September 24, 1989, adopting the model of European and North American guide dog schools.
Its current facilities, inaugurated by HM Queen Sofia, are located in Boadilla del Monte (Madrid), and have 110,000 square meters, which accommodate all services: parenting, housing and care of puppies, training and instruction of dogs , veterinary clinic, shelter for retired dogs and residence for the training of guide dog users.
