The Environmental Recovery Project of the Segura River.

Section included between Sotos Los Álamos and La Hijuela.

Municipal terms of Molina de Segura and Alguazas, carried out and about to be executed by the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, and in which the municipalities of Molina de Segura and Alguazas collaborate closely, will be presented today, Wednesday, June 27, at 8:00 p.m. the Board Room on the ground floor of the City Hall.

The Mayor of Molina de Segura, Esther Clavero Mira, the Water Commissioner of the CHS, José Carlos González Martínez, the Mayor of Alguazas, Blas Ángel Ruipérez Peñalver, and the Councilor for the Environment, Juan Alcaide Quirós.

The budget of this project reaches 965,000 euros, which includes: work to eliminate invasive plant species, especially sugarcane;

the planting of autochthonous riparian species, such as elms, poplars, almeces, ash trees, tarays, baladres, honeysuckle;

the maintenance of this plantation;

the informative signage and dissemination of the project;

Waste management;

among others.

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition, through the Plan to Promote the Environment for Adaptation to Climate Change (PIMA Adapta) allocates funds to mitigate the effects of climate change.

These actions will allow progress in adapting to climate change in Spain.

The aim is to stop the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, minimizing the risks and their impact.

For this, several measures have been proposed, among them, the regeneration of the riparian forest, which acts as a CO2 sink and the minimization of water loss by evapotranspiration, and the attainment of the good state of the water masses, through the improvement as much of the habitat as of the physical-chemical and biological processes that occur in it.

In the words of the CHS technicians and the document itself, "this project is intended to give continuity to the work carried out by the Molina de Segura City Council, in which two stretches of riparian forest have been recovered, the Soto de la Hijuela and Soto Los Álamos, 4 kilometers apart, this area presents as its main problem the presence of cane (Arundo donax), which, as an invasive species, interferes with the regeneration of the riverbank forest by quickly colonizing the area it leaves to be eliminated ".

The section of the river where the actions of the project are centered is public property and the management is the responsibility of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation.

The two main objectives of this project are to improve the ecological status of the Segura River in the stretch of the project with the regeneration of the riparian forest, which will act as a CO2 sink, and avoid the water losses caused by the high evapotranspiration of the existing cane fields. .

In this way, connectivity between the natural ecosystems of the Segura River is improved and strengthened by bringing the river closer to its natural state.

Once the reeds are cut, in the 4 kilometers of river and on both banks, between Soto Los Álamos and Soto La Hijuela, we will proceed to place a black plastic along the entire slope, which can be shocking, but that has as a priority to prevent the growth of the canes.
