The Councilor for Agriculture meets with the Director General of Public Health to study measures that end with the high number of ticks associated with the proliferation of the mountain rabbit (08/08/2018)

The Councilor for Agriculture of the City of Molina de Segura, Antonio López Vidal, and the Director General of Public Health and Addictions, José Carlos Vicente López, have recently held a meeting with the aim of adopting the necessary measures to eliminate the high number of ticks associated with the proliferation of the wild rabbit.

As a result of this meeting, which took place on Monday, August 6, a protocol for the control of potential vectors of zoonoses transmitters will be issued, which will include the joint actions to be carried out between the Ministry of Health of the Region of Murcia, the General Directorate of the Natural Environment and the Molina de Segura Town Hall.

This protocol will be part of a future collaboration agreement between the organizations involved to broaden the surveillance actions of diseases transmitted by vectors that may be of public health risk.

This pilot experience will begin with the control of the populations of field rabbits and the associated tick infestation.

At the meeting, along with the mayor of Molinense and the Director General, there were technicians from the Department of Agriculture and Sports and Health of the City of Molina de Segura, and technicians from the Directorate of Food Safety and Zoonoses and the Directorate General of Natural Environment .

The activities in development include a comprehensive approach to the problem;

the capture and hunting of field rabbits already begun, according to the Order of July 3, 2018, of the Ministry of Employment, Universities, Enterprise and Environment for which is declared Temporary Hunting Area for the prevention of agricultural damage caused by the proliferation of rabbits;

the management of the waste generated after the skinning and evisceration of the hunted field rabbits;

and tick control treatments programmed with acaricides of low residual power, both in the cultivation areas and in the adjoining zones and in transit of people, by the farmers and the Local Administration, respectively.

Likewise, as an extension of the zoonoses surveillance system, the sampling and typing of the ticks by the technicians of the Ministry of Health and INIA experts will be carried out and the role of the livestock farms of ruminants and other hosts will be addressed. Definitions of certain tick genera of importance to public health.

Finally, the opportune recommendations to prevent diseases caused by tick bites will be disseminated, especially to hikers, hunters, farmers and users of natural spaces, included in a health education program.

On Friday, August 10, a new meeting will be held by the organizations involved in the collaboration agreement, with affected farmers and hunting societies that are collaborating in the control of field rabbits, in order to inform them. of the actions to be carried out.
