The company SERCOMOSA carries out an audit for the energy optimization of the public lighting infrastructure in Molina de Segura (22/11/2018)

The main results of the Energy Efficiency Audit conducted by SERCOMOSA have been presented at a press conference today, Thursday, November 22 at the Molina de Segura Town Hall.

The Mayoress of the town and the President of SERCOMOSA, Esther Clavero Mira, the Managing Director of SERCOMOSA, Francisco Aguado Jiménez, and the head of the audit, Francisco Javier López Buciega, attended.

The Molina de Segura City Council, together with SERCOMOSA, a company that carries out a large part of the municipal services, present the main data obtained from the study carried out for the energy optimization of the public lighting infrastructure of the municipality of Molina de Segura.

This audit has been carried out by SERCOMOSA within the scope of its service contract, and in response to a priority set by the Mayor's Office, which is the improvement of the services provided to the citizen and the implementation of the concept of environmental, energy and economic sustainability in all activities that are managed by the City Council.

Molina de Segura, as one of the largest cities in population and geographical area of the Region of Murcia, has one of the largest public lighting infrastructures, which also translates into an economic effort and human maintenance, optimization of service and payment of the associated energy consumption.

Currently, the Molinense City Council is already doing an optimized management, with the technical resources at its disposal, selecting those urban areas that require less lighting and regulating schedules and lighting levels.

This management already produces important savings, but has reached its limit with the technical means available.

With an endowment of some 21,000 streetlights distributed by the municipality and districts, and considering that there is a large part of luminaries that are more than 20 or up to 30 years old, the current government team has set out to make a comprehensive action to reduce the costs associated with lighting and significantly improve the quality of the service.

"The first step that has already been carried out is to carry out an audit that has allowed us to analyze the state of the elements, the areas for improving the infrastructure and the options available in the market so that the citizens of Molina de Segura can benefit from the latest advances in lighting technology, control systems and energy savings that these advances allow ", highlights the Mayor.

Some of the important figures obtained from the audit are summarized below:

Approximate number of street lamps or luminaires: 21,000.

N ° of control panels: 270.

The recommendations of the audit are to replace the conventional technology of streetlights with the latest LED technology, install remote management systems that allow regulating schedules and levels of lighting, rehabilitation of electrical panels to meet the latest regulations and strengthen the conditions of security.

With these actions, which would cover the entire lighting and restoring the operation to 100% of the lampposts, it is estimated that the tangible benefit for the City Council will be:

Total economic savings for the Town Hall:> € 500,000 / year.

Reduction of energy consumption:> 70%

Reduction of tons of CO2:> 3,000 tons / year.

Other benefits associated with this intervention will be:

Improvement of the uniformity and quality of lighting throughout the municipality.

Greater safety, by increasing light intensity, and compliance with regulations, with clear benefits for pedestrians and vehicles, reducing the risk of accidents and crime.

Immediate detection of breakdowns or incidents, without the need for citizens or municipal services to report it.

Flexibility in management, being able to regulate schedules and lighting levels with the latest available technologies.

From a mobile phone can be adjusted at will.

Change in the image of urban furniture, with the replacement of obsolete equipment with others of high aesthetic value and design, with the possibility of maintaining those elements of artistic or historical value.

After this first step with the audit, the City Council has begun to evaluate the different options offered by the market, for the implementation of all these initiatives.

On the one hand, there is the modality of Energy Services Contracting, in which a private company is the one that makes the investment and is responsible for the savings;

and, on the other hand, to assume the investments the own City council creating a plan of sectorization of the municipality to undertake it in several phases.
