The Environmental Volunteer Program ¡Voluntari @ s Naturalmente !, of the Department of the Environment of the Molina de Segura Town Council, held on Saturday, November 24, an activity to monitor the occupation of nest boxes for small birds in Soto de la Hijuela, with the participation of a dozen volunteers.

During the activity, volunteers could meet the main species that nest on the banks of the Segura River and the area of ​​the garden, learning to identify the elements that would help them recognize the nests of each of them.

A review of the conservation status of nest boxes was carried out, and disinfection and repair were carried out in parallel.

We proceeded to replace 4 of the 9 boxes revised by new ones that were built by the volunteers themselves and all of them were renumbered.

Finally, a record of their occupation by birds or other types of animals was made, highlighting the presence of a sparrow nest and the occupation of one of the boxes for the hibernation of a gecko.

The Councilor for the Environment, Juan Alcaide Quirós, has highlighted "the importance of this type of activity, which makes it possible to verify the effectiveness of actions to improve natural spaces, in this case the attempt to provide the small avifauna of the River with spaces safe to create their nests, and that allow to review and improve them, and provide relevant information for the planning of future environmental volunteering activities. "

Alcaide thanked the participants for their collaboration in this activity, "with which they had the opportunity to improve a space of vital importance in the municipality as is the Segura River, contributing to the enrichment of its biodiversity and participating in its protection".

The activities of this program take place on the last Saturday of each month and are aimed at all those over 14 years old interested in the conservation of natural areas and the improvement of the municipality.
