Environmental Volunteers from Molina de Segura locate and identify four new specimens to be included in the municipal catalog of trees of local, monumental and singular interest (26/02/2019)

The Environmental Volunteer Program Volunteers Naturally!

of the Department of the Environment of the City of Molina de Segura held, on Saturday February 23, an activity to locate emblematic and significant trees for possible inclusion in the Municipal Catalog of trees and trees of local interest, monumental and unique, with the participation of a dozen volunteers.

During the activity, volunteers could make an approach to the arboreal heritage that Molina de Segura has, especially in the area of the garden.

They learned to recognize the most characteristic tree species and the criteria by which they can be included in the Municipal Catalog of trees and trees of local interest, monumental and unique.

They made measurements of their diameter and size and recorded their conservation status.

Four specimens were found (mulberry, fig tree, pine and cypress) that met the characteristics for their inclusion in the catalog as singular trees.

This activity aims to expand the data that was obtained in the last study carried out, dated in 2015.

In this 2015 study, 29 trees and 2 palm trees, 8 groves and 2 palm groves were documented, but the protection of municipal tree heritage requires a continuous study over time and an open catalog, in which volunteers have been involved and volunteers who, with their work, contribute to the protection and conservation of new specimens.

The Councilor for the Environment, Juan Alcaide Quirós, stressed "the importance of this type of activities, which help to raise awareness, know and value the important natural heritage that Molina de Segura has, and that provide relevant information to the technical staff in charge of its management ", and thanked" the volunteers for their collaboration in the identification of these new copies for their protection ".

The activities of this program are held on the last Saturday of each month and are aimed at all those over 14 years old interested in the conservation of natural areas and the improvement of the municipality.

Prior registration is required, which can be done through the website of the City Council www.molinadesegura.es, or through voluntariadoambiental@molinadesegura.es.
