Wildlife will be the object of study at the Visitor Information and Reception Center of Las Lagunas de Campotéjar Salar Gordo de Molina de Segura on Sunday, June 16 (13/06/2019)

The Department of the Environment of the City of Molina de Segura organizes on Sunday, June 16, at the Visitors Information and Welcome Center of Las Lagunas de Campotéjar Salar Gordo, two activities aimed at wildlife species that live and visit this protected natural area .

The center opens its doors on the first and third Sunday of each month from 10:00 to 14:00 hours, and offers information on the ecological and landscape values of Las Lagunas de Campotéjar Salar Gordo.

At 10.30 a guided tour will take place about the fauna of Las Lagunas de Campotejar, where participants will enjoy the fauna of the space and can observe it with binoculars and telescope, as well as detect other species more difficult to see through tracking.

After the route, at 12:30 a mobile workshop of birds for families will be held, in which the assistants will be able to carry out a manual on the most characteristic birds of the wetland and take it home, at the same time that they will know its characteristics.

Participation is free and it is not necessary to make prior registration, except for groups of more than 10 people.

It is recommended to bring water, hat, sunscreen and comfortable clothes and shoes.

The ecological wealth of the Las Lagunas de Campotéjar ZEPA has given them two categories of protection at European level.

On the one hand, it has been declared a Ramsar site or Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitats.

Within the European international agreements concerning the environment, it is the only one that focuses on a specific ecosystem, wetlands.

On the other hand, Las Lagunas de Campotéjar is declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA), because it meets the criteria established by the European Union for species such as the common stilt.

Other waterfowl of special conservation interest due to their degree of threat that have been observed in Las Lagunas are the white-headed duck (Oxuyra leucocephala), woodland teal (Marmaronetta angustirostris), white jar (Tadorna tadorna) and common tern (Sterna hirundo).

With this new activity the participants are asked the following question: why should we conserve the fauna?

Does it benefit or harm us?

And that, after carrying out the activities, understand that wildlife is a fundamental component of biodiversity and ecosystems, which allows the life cycle.

Each animal, insect or bird, has a function in nature, that is, an ecological function to maintain the balance of the trophic chain that has been established.

In addition, wildlife has economic importance, represented in the generation of knowledge and scientific research.

Specific cases are the development of pharmacological active principles, the study of pathogens, epidemiological studies that involve wild fauna as reservoirs or vectors, and that eventually would allow developing strategies for the control of diseases with a positive impact on public health.

An analysis of perceptions shows that wildlife has value because its presence, for example, beautifies natural settings, which, in a certain way, results in personal well-being and benefit.

Also from the economic point of view, and in order to demonstrate the importance of wildlife conservation in economic terms, it is necessary to mention the flourishing of companies dedicated to nature tourism such as bird watching or whale watching.
