Elena Alonso Frayle collects the XVI Setenil Prize 2019 for the Best Book of Stories Published in Spain for her book La mala entraña (12/12/2019)

The award ceremony of the XVI Setenil Prize 2019 for the Best Book of Stories Published in Spain, promoted by the Department of Culture of the City of Molina de Segura, took place today, Thursday, December 12, in the Hall of the Nonagonal Tower of MUDEM, with the assistance of the Councilor for Culture, Soledad Nortes Navarro, the winner of the XVI Setenil Prize, Elena Alonso Frayle, and the President of the Jury, Ángel Olgoso.

Prior to the award ceremony, at Paseo Rosales, a commemorative plaque of the winner of the Setenil Prize has been discovered, an act attended by the Councilor for Culture, the winning writer, and the President of the Jury.

The plaque has been placed on a bench in the promenade area and contains a commemorative text of the prize and an excerpt from the winning work, as well as a drawing made by the Molinense artist Juan Espallardo.

The jury of the XVI Setenil Prize, composed of Ángel Olgoso, Carmen M. Pujante Segura, Aurora Gil Bohórquez and Manuel Moyano, agreed to grant the award to Elena Alonso Frayle for his book La mala entraña, published by the publishing house Baile del Sol, in a busy edition to which 102 titles were presented.

Promoted by the Department of Culture of the City of Molina de Segura and known as "the Oscar of the story", the award of the Setenil Prize is 10,000 euros.

Elena Alonso Frayle (Bilbao, 1965), has a degree in Law and has studied Japan in Berlin.

He has lived in France, Senegal, Argentina, Germany, Thailand and Mongolia, and currently resides in Bolivia.

His novels have won prizes such as Gabriel Sijé (for The Iwakura Mission Legacy) and the 21st Century International Editorial Narrative Award (for The Silence of the Centuries), awarded in Mexico.

As author of stories, she had already been a finalist of the Setenil Prize in its XI and XIII editions with The Thread Conductor and Last Minute Changes, respectively.

The jury has declared regarding La mala entraña that, with his absorbing writing, Elena Alonso Frayle urges stories of increasing tension that persuade and disturb, that attract irresistibly and discomfort, that speak of atavistic behaviors and unwanted drives struggling to break through, some stories that reverberate after reading.

The sum of magnificent dialogues and ambiguous endings rounds the precision, intelligence and strangeness of a book of subtle ferocity.

The winners of the previous editions of Setenil, considered one of the most important story awards in the national literary scene, have been Alberto Méndez, Juan Pedro Aparicio, Cristina Fernández Cubas, Sergi Pàmies, Óscar Esquivias, Fernando Clemot, Francisco López Serrano, David Roas, Clara Obligado, Ignacio Ferrando, Javier Sáez de Ibarra, Emilio Gavilanes, Diego Sánchez Aguilar, Pedro Ugarte and José Ovejero.
