The ordinary Plenary Session of the City of Molina de Segura will discuss a motion by the Councilor for Education on the so-called parental veto (22/01/2020)

The Councilor for Education of the City of Molina de Segura, Fuensanta Martínez Jiménez, will raise, for its debate in the Ordinary Plenary session on January 27, a motion on the so-called Parental Veto that the Regional Government of Murcia wants to establish in the educational centers of the Autonomous Community.

Martínez recalls that the Spanish Educational System aims to achieve the full development of the personality of the students and that among the educational principles is "the transmission and implementation of values that favor personal freedom, responsibility, Democratic citizenship, solidarity, tolerance, equality, respect and justice, as well as helping to overcome any type of discrimination "(Article 2 of the LOMCE).

The Councilor for Education clarifies that the LOMCE, in addition, provides that it is the Directorate of Educational Centers who has the competence to approve all complementary activities deemed appropriate to develop the curriculum.

"The approval of the Parental Veto would imply an interference with the professionalism and freedom of the Chair of our and our teachers and a frontal attack on public education, which has always been committed to teaching values for the generation of free, critical societies, open and plural. "

Martínez adds that "nobody thinks that a teacher has among their plans to indoctrinate the students. Far beyond the reality that the Regional Government seems to pretend, our teachers fulfill a very important function; in addition to the transmission of theoretical knowledge, integrate activities aimed at promoting respect and equality in their teaching, thus fulfilling a mandate of the CARM's own curricular decrees. On the other hand, our minors have the right to receive a comprehensive education and the implementation of this veto would be a violation of this right. "

The councilor, by means of the motion that she will present in plenary, urges the Government of the Community to immediately withdraw the Instructions of May 3, 2018 on carrying out activities in the educational centers and modify the Resolutions of August 29, 2019, by those that the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Education and Culture gives instructions for the beginning of the course in the teaching centers that provide Infant Education, Primary Education, Compulsory Secondary Education and Baccalaureate of the Region of Murcia, in relation to the activities programmed by the centers, as well as to respect the current constitutional, legal and educational legislation so that the complementary activities are taught in said centers with total normality and following the channels established for it.

"This veto collides with the fundamental constitutional right to education, in addition to contravening various international treaties ratified by Spain (Convention on the Rights of the Child, Universal Declaration of Human Rights), as well as the Memorandum of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance, educational regulations, legislation on violence and specific regulations on LGTBI matters, "concludes Fuensanta Martínez.
