The three winning projects of the Natural Schools for SEO / BirdLife Change contest will promote climate action in schools (24/04/2020)

| CEIP Cervantes, from Molina de Segura (Murcia), CEIP Mar Mediterráneo de Almería and CEIP Virgen Sacedón de Pedrajas de San Esteban (Valladolid), have been the winners of the Natural Schools for Change contest | Of the 33 projects submitted, the three winning schools will receive 10,000 euros each to implement adaptation plans to climate change, which will serve as a reference for future similar initiatives in the school environment At a time when nature is more necessary than ever, SEO / BirdLife promotes climate action at school and local levels with this initiative, for which it has the support of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge through the Biodiversity Foundation 9 We are experiencing moments of great concern and uncertainty about the future, but there are two clear issues that this crisis is highlighting: that a change of model is necessary that takes into account the limits of nature and that green employment can be key for the recovery from the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. We are immersed in the double crisis of climate and biodiversity, which has put more than a million species in danger of extinction, and which also negatively affects human health, which is why last Wednesday, on the occasion of World Day On Earth, BirdLife International called on the United Nations to make the right to a healthy environment a fundamental human right.

And it is precisely these two issues, the fight against climate change and the conservation of biodiversity, which are the focus of the Natural Schools for Change contest, which SEO / BirdLife launched in December 2019, a few days before COP25 held in Madrid. Winning projects In total, 33 projects have been presented from public elementary schools from all over Spain that have worked in recent months to design a plan for adaptation to climate change for their center.

"At SEO / BirdLife we ??are very satisfied with the high interest generated and we thank all the centers that have participated in the effort made, especially in recent weeks, when the closure of classrooms in Spain came about due to the Covid-19 crisis" , says Beatriz Sánchez, from the organization's Urban Biodiversity program. In the jury, Environmental Training Advisers from the General Sub-Directorate of Teacher Training of the Ministry of Education and Youth, representatives of Ecooo, a renewable energy company that promoted the 50/50 project in educational and technical centers of SEO / BirdLife specialists in climate change and urban biodiversity.

In the evaluation of the projects, it has been especially taken into account that the plans contemplate as adaptation actions solutions based on nature and measures to promote biodiversity, as well as the incorporation of the measures as educational tools in the curricular project of the center. "This contest is one more step to bring nature into the classroom, an SEO / BirdLife initiative that aims to introduce nature into the Pact for Education," says Laura Benítez, the organization's environmental education technician. The three winning projects will receive € 10,000 to implement the measures of their plans, as well as technical support from SEO / BirdLife to develop them.

The implementation of these plans will serve to develop a guide for adaptation to climate change in educational centers that will help and encourage many other centers to develop these types of plans.

The implementation of adaptation measures in buildings is going to be a necessary measure in the not too distant future, in which the climate change scenarios in Spain predict an increase in temperature in summer of between 0.6 and 0.7 ° C per decade and a reduction in the reserves of the Spanish hydrographic basins between 3% and 7% until 2040. The current situation we are living in can serve to accelerate transformations that were already underway.

Ana Carricondo, coordinator of conservation programs at SEO / BirdLife, points out that "the fight against climate change and the loss of biodiversity is a great opportunity to overcome the economic and social crisis.

It is also the only option to secure the future of future generations.

Educational centers, as meeting places for children and young people fighting for their future, local and regional administrations and families, are a perfect setting to promote this change.

" SEO / BirdLife hopes that the Natural Schools for Change project will promote the incorporation of the educational community as an active agent in the fight against climate change and promote climate action at the local level.

The project has the support of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge through the Biodiversity Foundation.
