World AIDS Day (DMS) is commemorated annually on 1 December and is intended for public awareness of HIV infection.

The fight against HIV / AIDS has been an international political priority for more than 30 years and, thanks to political and economic commitments, progress in prevention, treatment and support to those affected has been reflected in a decline in figures Incidence and prevalence, and mortality associated with HIV infection and AIDS.

The latest UNAIDS report shows how much progress has been made in controlling the global AIDS epidemic, noting that it has succeeded not only in curbing but also in reducing the spread of HIV.

We are therefore in a position to begin to consider ending the AIDS epidemic by the year 2030.

Currently the epidemiological situation of HIV infection and other STIs in our country is a public health problem, especially in the case of HIV, since it is a chronic, severe and complex disease with an economic impact.

In Spain, HIV infection continues to be a public health problem, both because of its morbidity and mortality burden and because of its economic and social repercussions.

The rates of new diagnoses in our country are similar to those of other Western European countries, although slightly higher than the average of the European Union as a whole.

As in Spain, HIV transmission in the Region of Murcia is largely attributable to sexual violence (practically 9 out of every 10 cases recorded between 2009 and 2014).

In the Region, half of cases recorded between 2009 and 2014 present a late diagnosis of infection, with a slight reduction in recent years (40% in 2013 and 2014 ).

At present, HIV transmission has evolved into a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) since sexual violence is responsible for 93% of new carriers in our country.

Therefore, when having sex with people who do not know whether or not they are infected, condom use is the key to prevention.

Half of HIV-infected patients can not adequately benefit from antiretroviral treatments because they are diagnosed late when their immune status is too affected.

These patients may have prevented progression of the infection if they had been diagnosed before.

"The public health system has a responsibility to ensure that citizens who have already become infected are aware of their serological status as soon as possible in order to initiate appropriate treatment and halt the progression of the disease, as well as the transmission 'N of infection in other people, "explains the Councilor for Public Health, Esther Sánchez Rodríguez.
