The Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries is developing a project for the conservation and expansion of fig varieties in an experimental farm in Molina de Segura, located in the Huerta de Arriba area, which can benefit farmers in the region, agricultural cooperatives, Technicians and students.
The project began in 2013 from the planting of fig trees in this farm of the Center Integrated Training and Experiences Agrarian (Cifea) of Molina de Segura, in an area of ​​0.85 hectares.
It is intended to collect data on ripening and harvesting of figs and brevae in the 33 existing varieties over 7 years.
The objective is to preserve this collection for its value as a bank of plant material and expand it with other varieties that may be of interest.
During the current year, soil analysis was performed to facilitate the calculation of irrigation and subsistence needs of the crop, as well as pest and disease monitoring and control, among other aspects.
The project has an environmental efficiency plan with the aim of reducing waste, emissions and the consumption of 'inputs', and to develop it in a sustainable way.
To disseminate the results of the project, an annual report and the scheduling of visits to the farm by farmers, technicians and students of agronomy are planned, in order to show the evolution of the crop.
