The Municipality of Molina de Segura takes steps to end the plague of rabbits in the countryside of Mine which causes heavy losses to farmers (30/06/2017)

The Plenary Hall of the Municipality of Molina de Segura hosts today, Friday 30 June, at 1 pm, a meeting of the Working Group convened on the occasion of the plague of rabbits that affects the field of Molina de Segura, which is producing Economic losses to farmers in the municipality.

This pest is affecting both horticultural crops and fruit trees (mostly bone in Molina de Segura), due to the bites of these lagomorphs, and to agricultural infrastructure, as the burrows dug by the rabbits chop the slopes of Agricultural terraces, rafts and others, causing them to be repaired in the fear that the damage and risks will be aggravated.

In addition, there is a risk of plague of ticks carried by these animals.

The reasons for the pest are mainly environmental.

And the rabbit has benefited from the few precipitations this spring, when it is his time of reproduction.

All this, combined with the large amount of food that grew due to the rains that did fall in winter, has led to an increase in the rabbit population.

Rabbits were not a problem until the food in the field is over, forcing them to enter, more than normal, in agricultural crops.

The solutions go through the authorization for the capture or hunting of hunting species of agricultural damages issued by the CARM, and that can be carried out by both hunters and specialized companies that use trap boxes and / or ferrets with nets for capture in Alive of the harmful species.

This is why the City of Mine has made the necessary steps to obtain as much information as possible about the pest, as well as to expedite the processing of authorizations.

The results are presented today in the aforementioned Working Table, in which farmers, the Hunting Federation, companies dedicated to the live capture of animals and municipal politicians of the affected areas, which are Agriculture, Environment and Public Health .

The Councilor for Agriculture, Antonio López Vidal, chairs the meeting.
