Education in cooking and healthy eating

The mediatization experienced by the kitchen in recent years is significantly influencing not only the adult population, but also the child population.

Specifically, through television, with the profusion of programs of great audience on this subject, in some cases with the presence of children's participants.

This widespread popularization of the kitchen, together with local experiences such as Breakfasts with Science, driven by the WEF itself, have turned the kitchen into a pedagogical tool of high value, in the task of inspiring in children healthy habits of life, respect for others, the breaking of perverse social roles and the appreciation of teamwork.

In addition, the dissemination of these contents with the participation of children promotes the common accomplishment of tasks in the home of the different members of the family unit.

Cooking and food, as well as sources of health (and illness) and pleasure, invoke an extensive set of stimuli that activate our intellective capacities (imagination, creativity, curiosity), manual and technological skills, and our social, emotional and sensory

When we use the kitchen as an educational tool from the earliest childhood, we are shaping a vast repertoire of answers directly linked to the formation of the student's personality.

The objectives of the project are:

1- To put children in contact with healthy foods, promoting their manipulation and the perception of textures, aromas and flavors, initiating them in the relationships between natural products and what they are on the plate.

2- Link the kitchen and food with a playful, fun, close and creative experience, enhancing the interest in the kitchen.

3- Promote the development of attitudes and habits of respect, help and collaboration, thanks to teamwork.

4- Carry out usual activities and simple tasks to solve problems of daily life with the greatest possible autonomy.

5- To value, for children and their parents, values such as food safety and hygiene, the importance of a balanced diet, the danger of the abuse of prepared foods and processed foods and other bad food uses, as well as the rejection of roles of gender in relation to housework, specifically, the kitchen.

The project is based on the combination of two formats: the cooking workshops, aimed at children and, tangentially, at parents, and the talks-colloquium aimed at parents.

Children's kitchen workshops.

It consists of 90-minute sessions, taught by a chef-trainer of recognized experience in working with children, who will prepare with them a series of culinary preparations, under strict safety standards, in which children can manipulate products, observe their characteristics, combine them and finally, taste the final result.

The training chef will be supported by staff from the Medical Studies Foundation and by the project coordinator.

At the end of that time, two monitors will take the children to another space to do some playful activity, while the parents engage in a small conversation with the trainer and the organizers.

These will solve doubts and make proposals to improve the feeding of children in their homes.

Talks-colloquium.

Conferences with subsequent colloquium aimed at parents of students and taught by renowned researchers, professors and experts in nutrition, physiology of food, bromatology and other food sciences, to be carried out on dates different from those of the workshops.
