The Environmental Volunteer Program Volunteers Naturally !, promoted by the Department of the Environment of the City of Molina de Segura, proposes a new activity for the construction of nest boxes in the SPA of Lagunas de Campotéjar Salar Gordo, which will take place on Saturday 28 April, from 10.00 am (departure at 0930 hours in front of the headquarters of the Department of Environment, Avenida de Madrid).

Volunteers who participate in this activity will have the opportunity to increase the nesting areas for small insectivorous birds in this protected natural space, by manufacturing nest boxes specific to certain species of passerine birds and their placement in the environment of Lagoons of Campotéjar.

The Lagunas de Campotéjar Salar Gordo were declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) in 2014 and a Wetland of International Importance (Ramsar site) in 2011. Since 2004, the Environment Service of the Department of the Environment has developed a management program for the conservation of this natural space.

This wetland has an important natural heritage and ecological values ​​to highlight, such as the presence of migratory water birds with regional, state and global protection, such as the white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala), a bird in danger of extinction worldwide.

With this activity, we want to highlight the importance of conservation of one of the groups of birds present in Las Lagunas, the passerines of the reeds, small insectivorous birds among which we highlight the bastard nightingale (Cettia cetti) and the torric reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus ).

According to the Councilor for the Environment, Juan Alcaide Quirós, "with this new activity of the Environmental Volunteering Program we continue to work on raising awareness among citizens of Molina de Segura about the values ​​of the Las Lagunas de Campotéjar Salar Gordo wetland, a space protected from the European Natural 2000 Network, and to involve them in the need to preserve it for the present and the future, I encourage all the population to know, value and preserve our environment by participating in the activities of the Molina de Segura environmental volunteering program ".

The activities of this program take place on the last Saturday of each month and are aimed at all those over 14 years old interested in the conservation of natural areas and the improvement of the municipality.
