The City of Molina de Segura, the municipal health centers and Kellogg team up to promote healthy breakfasts for 15,000 schoolchildren (29/10/2010)

The City of Molina de Segura (NAOS Strategy Award 2009), Kellogg (Special mention NAOS Strategy 2007) and health centers in the municipality put in place an ambitious Plan for the Promotion of healthy breakfasts, led to 15,000 schoolchildren in 37 centers education, which includes students from kindergarten to high school.

The program, which has the support of the Ministry of Health of the Region of Murcia, has been presented at a press conference today, Friday 29 October, in the Plenary Hall of the City Council, the Mayor of Molina de Segura Eduardo Contreras Linares, the Director General of Public Health of the Region of Murcia, Francisco José García Ruiz, President and CEO of Kellogg Spain and Portugal, Mauricio Garcia de Quevedo, the Councillor for Health, Lola Vicente Quiles, President of Spanish Society of Community Nutrition, Javier Aranceta Bartrina, the Health Center Coordinator Professor Antonio García García, Emilio Pérez Macanás, and Health Center Coordinator Jesús Marín López, Juan Francisco Menéndez Puche.

This activity is included within the Obesity Prevention Program for Children and Youth Molina de Segura, who last June 17, 2010 received from the Ministry of Health NAOS Award for Best Healthy Eating Program in School of Spain.

The program includes three activities:

1 °) Information campaign Discover the treasure: discover the healthy breakfast for all children and young people from 1 to 18 years in the municipality and their parents, which includes 10,000 units of a leaflet to be distributed to all schools and Health Centres in the locality.

2 °) the establishment of the Day Weekly Fruit, sent to all schools in Nursery, Primary and Secondary, which proposes that the day all the children bearing fruit for breakfast.

3 °) Education Program Discoverers breakfast, Kellogg's Breakfast Club, aimed at primary pupils, which is the delivery of educational materials for teachers and students.

This material, supported by the Spanish Society of Community Nutrition, will be distributed to all schools who request to sensitize school children about the importance of a complete breakfast in a varied and balanced diet, and the need for physical exercise daily.

The program also includes Cole Contest I best breakfast, through which students and teachers will have the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge acquired.

The contest may be submitted on a voluntary basis all centers and is equipped with a prize of 5,000 euros in sports equipment to the winning school.

The Mayor of Molina de Segura Eduardo Contreras Linares, thanked "Kellogg their enthusiasm and initiative in promoting the health of citizens and generosity at the time to implement this educational program, which aims to promote lifestyle health, emphasizing the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle and balanced diet. The event was also a lecture by Dr. Javier Aranceta Bartrina prestigious, President of the Spanish Society of Community Nutrition and Covian Grand Prize 2007, which has exposed the heads of schools the importance of balanced and full breakfast in the school.
