This species breeds in three wetlands that have been selected to develop the LIFE Project: Floating Campotéjar (Molina de Segura), consisting of 5 lakes of a former sewage treatment plant of wastewater lagoons, now operating as ponds that store agricultural water, Lake of the mulberry (Mazarron), formed by 4 tanks of an old treatment plant wastewater lagoons, which are now abandoned and a gravel pit that receives water from the existing treatment plant, and Lagunas de las Salinas (Alhama de Murcia), consisting of 2 tanks of an old treatment plant wastewater lagoons, now operating as ponds that store water for agricultural use.

Over time, these three spaces have become naturalized to the growth of reed-belt mainly around the edges, giving rise to three naturalized lake complexes attractive to many vertebrates among them birds, particularly waterfowl.

The project's main objective is to show society that it is possible to reconcile the water purification, subsequent agricultural use and conservation of nature in the pond where the water is stored, since in some cases have become important places for conservation of some species of waterfowl, such as white-headed duck.

The LIFE project investment * White-headed Duck amounts to 1,342,103 euros, and is funded by: 75% of funds from the EU LIFE, 4.40% of the municipalities that are members of the Project (Molina de Segura, Murcia Alhama and Mazarron) and 20.60% of the region.
