The City of Molina de Segura and the Ministry of Presidency of the Region of Murcia are developing project activities LIFE + for the conservation of white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala) in the Region of Murcia, aimed at schools, neighborhood associations and centers women .

LIFE projects are an instrument of the European Union to fund conservation initiatives and environmental protection.

Specifically, this project works in the field of Nature (Project LIFE + Nature & Biodiversity: LIFE09/NAT/ES/000516), and its budget amounting to EUR 1.342 million for four years, of which 75% comes from funds Europeans.

The City molinense contributes 4.40% of the total budget.

Molina de Segura part in the Action D1 awareness and dissemination of the project LIFE + Nature and Biodiversity, with the development of this program of outreach and awareness in schools, neighborhood associations and neighbors, youth, women, etc.., and collaboration on awareness and information program (Action D2) affected social sectors of the local population in the wetland environment Campotéjar Lagoons, including irrigation communities and farmers, environmental groups and volunteers, landowners near the wetland, and the general population of Molina de Segura.

The white-headed duck is a bird, known as duck, which is in danger of extinction worldwide, of which one of its largest populations are found in the wetlands of Campotéjar Lagoons, located in the town of Molina de Segura.

A semi space since January 2011 is classified as a Ramsar site, or wetland of international importance, for their ecological values ​​for waterfowl.

The male of this species has a white head with a narrow black pileus, brownish neck and body, and a long tail that usually takes time bridal upright.

Its beak turns blue from December to March, missing since October.

It feeds on seeds, vegetative parts of submerged plants and insect larvae.

Its preferred habitat is freshwater lakes and brackish with a wide belt of vegetation perilagoonal and with a depth of 1.5 to 3 meters.

Campotéjar Lagoons, which consist of five rafts of an old treatment plant lagoons, have hosted more than 10% of the white-headed duck population of the western Mediterranean.

This enclave is a habitat of vegetation characteristics of wet salt marsh, which in recent years has become an important place for wintering, migration and breeding of waterfowl and other wildlife of wetlands.

Since 2004 censuses Bird Campotéjar Lagoons confirm the presence of over 100 species during breeding, wintering or migration, and the presence of other species also endangered in the national and international context, as the marbled teal and the ferruginous duck.

Among conservation actions include improving optimal habitat for reproduction of this species in the lakes of Campotéjar, studies on the status of populations and the characteristics of these birds, and the reconciliation of conservation biodiversity with agricultural use of treated wastewater in modern treatment plants.

The purpose of the environmental education program for the conservation of white-headed duck and wetland habitat in the lakes of Campotéjar LIFE09/NAT/ES/000516 Project, is citizen approach to knowledge of this bird and the countryside where he lives and reproduced.

For this, we have to integrate environmental, cultural and socio-economic environment of the Lagoons, looking especially awareness of their values ​​and problems, in order to encourage respectful attitudes and committed to the species and its natural environment.

In this sense, the Councillor for the Environment, encouraged "all civic associations and the education community to continue to participate in the planned activities and working with conservation actions and the white-headed duck habitat, Campotéjar Lagoons, showing their commitment and responsibility to the conservation of nature. During the year 2012, are participating 14 schools in the LIFE + Conservation of White-headed Duck, with the participation of about 1,000 students, in addition to citizens' associations, central woman Punta del Lugar, the Literary Association of Women of Molina de Segura, the woman center of Fatima, the wife of downtown La Ribera de Molina, the center of San Miguel's wife, and the neighborhood association of La Molineta.
