The City of Molina de Segura, health centers and UCAM perform a new study on the prevalence of childhood obesity (07/03/2013)

The City of Molina de Segura, through the departments of Health and Education, the township health centers, and the ministries of Health and Education in the Region of Murcia, held together a new epidemiological study of prevalence of childhood obesity among children aged 3 to 12 years enrolled in schools in the municipality, within the Obesity Prevention Program for Children and Youth Molina de Segura.

To perform this study, have been invited to participate on a voluntary basis to 25 schools with students of these ages and levels correspond to the Early Childhood and Elementary Education.

Measurements are performed by health professionals and students of San Antonio Catholic University (UCAM), belonging to the Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, a total of 8,545 children.

The data are anonymous to confidential treatment, trying to determine the body mass index as data that enables the degree of obesity and childhood overweight population.

This new study attempts to verify the current situation and assess the evolution with the previous study in 2007, and where, after weighing and measuring children 6139, we obtained a worrying rate of childhood obesity prevalence of 16.3% and a overweight rate of 26.9%.

The 2007 study received the Research Award 1st National Congress of Pediatrics.

As a complement to be performed an epidemiological survey of children aged 5 ° of Primary.
