Molina de Segura celebrates World Tree Day with the creation and enhancement of CO2 sinks (21/03/2014)

On the occasion of the celebration of World Tree Day, which celebrates Friday, March 21, the Department of the Environment and Urban Municipality of Molina de Segura, in collaboration with the Directorate General for the Environment, commitment twofold : remind their neighbors the importance of increasing forest cover and conserve natural areas and parkland, as another way to fight climate change, promote a healthy city, and enhance biodiversity, and create and enhance CO2 sinks the municipality, including the forest areas of urbanization and municipal groves Altorreal River Segura.

If you consider that photosynthesis is the main mechanism of carbon sequestration, plants and the food chain are considered as natural carbon sinks that absorb carbon from the atmosphere and help reduce the amount of CO2 in the air.

Given the importance of vegetation has in the fight against climate change, will be making plantations of native trees and groves on the banks of the Segura River as it passes by Molina de Segura, in collaboration with the Adecco Foundation, through Astrada boys of association and workers Canning Company Auxiliary, and forest areas Altorreal a proposal from the Urban Conservation Authority of Private Altorreal, all residents of this community.

The schedule of activities is as follows:

More than 300 plants will be planted.

These actions and conservation programs and increased both existing riparian vegetation in the Segura River, as a forest of certain natural areas and parkland of Molina de Segura, conducted by the Natural Environment Service of the Department of Environment, have as main objectives:

Promote the survival of habitats that optimize and sustain native species.

Maintaining biodiversity.

Lost and spread riparian forest to ensure good coverage with native riparian species that protect soil and provide a favorable microclimate refuge for a diverse wildlife, and serve as natural carbon sinks.

Conserve natural heritage.

Generate carbon sinks: each mature tree consumes on average 6 kg of carbon dioxide per year.

Actively involve the population in these environmental restoration programs.

Councillor for the Environment and Urban, Juana Carrillo Muñoz, "the CO2 retained by the trees contributes to the overall reduction of global warming. Hence the importance of sensitizing the population molinense the need to conserve our forests, vegetation and biodiversity that have both fauna, flora and landscape. Moreover, this land degradation and desertification of our land will be avoided.'s very important social participation of our citizens in this task of preservation and enhancement of our natural spaces, as it is an essential element in the process of sustainable development of our city. "

In the past three years the city of Molina de Segura has planted about 735 trees.

If we consider that each consume about 6 kg.

of CO2 per year, has managed to remove the atmosphere molinense about 4,410 kilos of CO2 per year.

The City of Molina de Segura performs maintenance on 42 wooded acres Ecological Park Vicente Blanes, estimated daily produce oxygen consumed 252 people.

Meanwhile, Las Lagunas de Campotéjar contribute to the generation of natural CO2 sinks with 5,810 m2 of wooded area, the rest until 30 have occupied this wetland is occupied by salt marsh vegetation.

And in the Segura River, passing by Molina de Segura, an area occupied by riparian vegetation (cottonwoods, elms and tarays mainly) of 1,690 meters, which represents 10% of total tour length is established this town, and soak up the CO2 emitted by 1,320 vehicles (each 200 released grams per kilometer).

As pointed Joan Carrillo, "this celebration of Arbor Day is a small contribution to this process of improving CO2 sinks in Molina de Segura".
