Molina de Segura celebrates World Wetlands Day in the Lagunas de Campotéjar (30/01/2015)

Molina de Segura takes this commemoration for the dissemination of European LIFE 09 / NAT / ES / 000516 project for the conservation of the White-headed duck, a water bird endangered worldwide.

On February 2 is chosen by the international community to celebrate World Wetlands Day, day around which are organized worldwide various activities in order to bring citizens to knowledge of the values presenting wetlands and their importance as high biodiversity ecosystems and the urgent need to preserve them.

Therefore, next Sunday February 1st, the City of Molina de Segura, along with the Directorate General for Environment and the European Commission's LIFE, add to the global campaign of the Ramsar Convention and the FAO, in slogan "Wetlands for our future", and carry out activities to publicize the objectives of LIFE 09 / NAT / ES / 00516 project for the conservation of the white-headed duck in the Region of Murcia.

A European project funded by the European Commission which is basically the enhancement of the white-headed duck.

(Oxyura leucocephala), a water bird endangered worldwide, which nests for about ten years ago and lives in the wetlands of the Lagunas de Campotejar.

Moreover, Molina de Segura has a catalog of 17 wetlands with the necessary information on their ecological, social and cultural values.

Among them Fountain Hortichuela, Salinas de Molina, Fountain Setenil, Saladar Barranco del Diablo and the Cañada de los Herreros, Pozas the Rambla del Chorro and Carrizalejo, Source Chorrico.

The importance of these wetlands is that they are ecosystems with high biodiversity, regulators of the water cycle and climate, water generators to supply freshwater areas and are used for human activities such as tourism and fishing.

Wetlands as regulators of the water cycle, help control floods and droughts, contribute to the provision of water and are irreplaceable wildlife refuges.

The wetland Lagoons Campotéjar of Molina de Segura is considered since 2011 a wetland of international-site Ramsar importance, is the second largest in the presence of waterfowl, after the Mar Menor lagoon, and last year was declared Special Protection Area (SPA)

Throughout the whole morning of Sunday February 1 and open to all visitors who wish to attend, environmental educators companies Algaria, SL and Ecoespuña, SL undertake various activities both at the Centre for Information and Visitor Reception with in Lagoons own Campotéjar, including: 1- interpretive trail itinerary Lagunas, at 10:00 h .;

2- Workshop scientific ringing of small terrestrial birds with banders ANSE / SEO will be held during the itinerary around the 10'30h;

3-Workshop masks duck and other birds in 3D, will begin at 12:00 h.

The Councillor for Environment, Juana Carrillo, "highlights the importance of wetlands and especially the Lagunas de Campotejar, Special Protection Area for Birds, and commitment to the conservation of these ecosystems, dissemination and management actions. We are working together with the Irrigation Communities to reconcile agricultural use of treated water, which is stored in lagoons, to the conservation of the species of protected aquatic fauna that inhabit them. We believe that this collaboration has been fundamental to the achievement in 2011 This international recognition of Laguna de Campotejar as a Ramsar site, and your rating in 2014 as SPAs ".

The Department of Environment has also developed several environmental education programs aimed at teaching centers, social organizations, under the LIFE 09 / NAT / project ES / 00516 for the conservation of the white-headed duck in the Region of Murcia, and the local population, with various activities, including lectures, guided tours and interpretive tours around the wetland Lagoons Campotéjar.

The celebration of World Wetlands Day invites us to reflect on the importance of these unique ecosystems and unknown, therefore, will address specific objectives such as:

Introduce the flagship wetland Molina de Segura;

through the exploration of natural, cultural values ​​and new infrastructure.

Foster discussion about the problems they face these key ecosystems and promote citizen participation to conserve them.

Show the important ecosystem services provided by wetlands.

Streamline, through Volunteer Programs and Social Awareness in Molina de Segura, the discovery of this space SPA and RAMSAR listed as among its citizens.
