The Mayor of Molina de Segura in Brussels attending a joint ceremony of the Covenant of Mayors and Mayors for Adaptation Thursday October 15 (14/10/2015)

The Mayor of Molina de Segura, Eduardo Contreras Linares, attends on Thursday 15 October in Brussels, joint initiatives ceremony of the Covenant of Mayors and Mayors for adaptation, this latest initiative launched by the Directorate General of Climate Action of the European Commission in March 2014 and the city of Molina de Segura joined in October the same year, along with 52 other municipalities throughout Europe.

This meeting is organized by Miguel Arias Canete, a member of the European Commission responsible for Climate and Energy.

A new target of reducing CO2 emissions by 2030 more ambitious (reducing emissions up to 40%) and the integration of prevention efforts and adaptation to climate change, under a European initiative will be the main features of the event, which he was also attended by the Mayor of Murcia.

In January 2008, the European Commission launched an initiative in order to involve citizens in the fight against global warming through a consistent agreement on a formal commitment from the cities.

The Covenant of Mayors is grouped in a permanent network, the most active cities in Europe, willing to comply with a formal commitment to fight global warming.

This permanent network is designed for exchange and application of best practices in all of these cities with the intention to improve, significantly, energy efficiency in the urban environment.

The main purpose is to go beyond the objectives set out in the EU for 2020, reducing CO2 emissions by an action plan for sustainable energy, promoting energy efficiency and renewable energies.

To achieve the target set by the Covenant of Mayors, municipalities must first establish an inventory of emissions of CO2 and, subsequently, a Plan of Action for Sustainable Energy (PAES) summarizing the main actions planned to carry out each signing entity.

The Development Agency of Murcia (INFO) is currently the supporting structure of the Covenant of Mayors for the Region of Murcia, replacing the ARGEM.

These two agencies have promoted losayuntamientos support of the Region of Murcia, all attached to the Covenant, in adopting energy efficiency measures and inviting them to meet the objective of the European Union to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% before 2020 and the reduction in energy consumption by at least 20%, and increasing the use of renewable energy to 20%.
