Environmental Volunteers Molina de Segura placed nest boxes in Soto de La Hijuela banks of the River Segura (16/06/2008)

A group of environmental volunteers have undertaken during the last weekend in the manufacture and placement of several nest boxes in the Hijuela Soto on the banks of the River Segura.

This activity is part of the Environmental Volunteer Program of the City of Molina de Segura for 2008, whose main aim to involve young people in the recovery of the Segura River as it passes through the town.

On Saturday June 14 monitors the program, Yelo Nestor and Virginia Pina, accompanied by a youth group from Molina de Segura, Sewer and Lorca, staged a walk out along the banks of the River Segura for the observation and appreciation of birds who live and visit this nature, through the management of guides, binoculars and telescope.

In addition, manufactured and placed several nest boxes.

As pointed out by the Councillor for the Environment, Consuelo Rosauro Meseguer, "the main objective of this activity is to provide small birds that frequent our river a place to shelter and breed.

Unfortunately, the tree species once abundant in our rivers, are now very low or almost nonexistent, so to recover populations of these birds one of the solutions is to provide artificial logs with holes, ie placing nest boxes. "

In the Region of Murcia is known 40 species of birds that nest boxes can be used to breed or rest.

The most common are tits, cappuccino tits, sparrows, laundresses, starlings, tawny owls.

Nest boxes are made of pine wood, natural material for a long time enduring the rain and sun.

The thickness of the wood must be 15 or 20 mm.

According to the Councillor for the Environment "Another objective of this activity is to give value to environmental education and public awareness to respect nature and the creatures that inhabit it.

To do this, from the Department of Environment give some tips for enjoying nature, and respect the trees and their branches, to respect plants and wild flowers, crops and natural landscapes, understand and protect wild animals no residue in the fields and rivers, enjoy nature through observation, drawing and photography of landscapes, plants and animals, and finally condemning all attacks on those who observe nature, is just a change to enjoy of it. "

The other scheduled activities will continue into September Environmental Volunteers.
