Molina de Segura commemorating the International Year of Astronomy 2009 with an exciting program of activities (13/01/2009)

The schedule of activities organized by the city of Molina de Segura to commemorate the International Year of Astronomy 2009 has been presented at a press conference today Tuesday 13 January, Councillor of Tourism, Sonia Carrillo Marble, Environment Councillor Consuelo Rosauro Meseguer, and the Chairman of the Scientific Society Astronomical Molina, José Antonio de los Reyes.

First, on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 January at the Centro Las Balsas (Calle Cartagena, Barrio Sacred Heart) is held the Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, organized by the Department of Tourism, in collaboration with the Scientific Molina Astronomical Society, the University of Murcia, the Spanish Fireball Network, the Astronomical Association of the Region of Murcia, and the Seneca Foundation (Regional Agency for Science and Technology).

The conference offers the following activities:

Friday, January 16

17.30 hours: Reception of participants, a marvelous, exhibition of astronomical images from the Hubble Space Telescope.

18.00: Opening ceremony.

18.30: CONFERENCE on Spanish Network for Research on Fireball and Meteorite: A New Era of Systematic retrieval of rock arrivals from distant places in the Solar System, by Dr. Josep Maria Trigo i Rodriguez of the Institute of Space Sciences (CSIC / IEEC).

20.00: Telescopes, an amazing time machine, by Albert Sánchez Caso, Gualba Astronomical Observatory (Barcelona) MPC442.

21.00: Astronomical Observations from the viewpoint of Centro Las Balsas.

23.00 pm: End of observation.

Saturday, January 17

17.00: Exhibition of meteorites from the Research Network on Fireball and Meteorite, by

researchers Dr. Josep Maria Trigo i Rodriguez (CSIC / IEEC) and Dr. José María Madiedo (UHU / CIECEM).

18.00: Visions of Urania, a look at the real Universe (Introduction to Observational Astronomy) by Jose Osorio Ripero of

M1 Group and Centro Astronómico de Ávila.

19.00: CONFERENCE on Earth and Moon as natural laboratories to study the meteoroids, by Dr. José María Madiedo, University of Huelva, CIECEM.

20.30: Astronomical Observations from the viewpoint of Centro Las Balsas.

23.00 pm: End of observation.

The Department of Environment, meanwhile, has scheduled an activity to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the fall of the meteorite in Molina de Segura (December 24, 1858), which consists of a visit to the Classroom High Nature of the landing to learn playing the largest meteorite fall in Spain and a tour around different points of geological interest in Molina de Segura.

All this takes place on Sunday 25 January, from 10.00 to 13.30 hours, departure by bus from the door of the Department of Environment, Avenida de Madrid, n º 3.

Registration can be done until Monday 19 January.

The Councillor for the Environment, Consuelo Rosauro says that "we want to bring this event to all citizens in activities that bring them about the importance of meteorites to the knowledge of nature, our origin and the impact of a phenomenon that as it has on the environment.

We therefore propose an activity to learn about playing the Meteor and the approximate location of his fall in 1858. "

Nature's Classroom High in The Landing, a former teacher school in the hallway, renovated in 1998 for training, environmental education and interpretation, housed in its exhibition permanent sample Molina's history through fossils, to pieces very valued by the experts in paleontology, and reproduction of fallen meteorite Molina in 1858.

With the visit, participants will approach the area where the meteor landed between the hamlets of Campotéjar and The Hornera.

Also take this opportunity to learn about various places of geological interest of the municipality, as the Rambla del Salar, the Cerro de Los Coloraos, Loma Plan and the Sierra de Place and fossilized coral reefs of the landing.

The activity is free and will be guided by an Environmental Educator.

On December 24, 1858 fell in the town of Molina de Segura the largest meteorite found in the entire Iberian Peninsula.

Therefore, in 2008 marked the 150 anniversary of the fall.

The meteorite was fragmented into 16 pieces and weighs 144 kg.

It is part of the permanent collection of National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid, along with three other fragments of the same at 13.8 and 4 kilograms.

The remaining fragments are scattered around museums worldwide.

Moreover, the October 27, 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) announced the declaration by UNESCO del2009 as the International Year of Astronomy (AIA/IYA2009), ratified by the UN on December 19, 2007.

The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (AIA 2009)

represents a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society, culture and human development.

Its main objective is to encourage citizens around the world to redefine their place in the universe across a path of discovery that began 400 years ago, when Galileo Galilei first used the telescope for astronomical purposes.

Activities spread across the globe are intended to stimulate interest in astronomy and science in general, since its influence on our daily lives to how scientific knowledge can contribute to a more free and equal.

Molina de Segura has been chosen by the Levante subnode to have the honor to open the International Year of Astronomy, as two members of the Spanish National Node for the preparation of the International Year of Astronomy, are molinense and founding members of Molina Scientific Astronomical Society.

This partnership brings together citizens of all ages with an interest in the field of astronomy.
