The City of Molina de Segura collaborates with the Smile Saharaui Association in the Peace Holidays Program 2020 (14/02/2020)

The Holidays in Peace 2020 Program, promoted by the Sarisaui Smile Association, has been presented at a press conference on Friday, February 14, at the City of Molina de Segura.

The initiative has been presented by the Councilor for Development Cooperation and Solidarity, Mariano Vicente Albaladejo, the President of the Saharaui Smile Association, Juana Abenza Abenza, and the Vocal of the Saharaui Smile Association, Lorena Palazón López.

Holidays in Peace has been developed in collaboration with the City of Molina de Segura for more than 20 years.

It basically consists of welcoming a Saharawi boy or girl, whose age ranges between 7 and 12 years, for two months, from the end of June to the end of August.

In Spain, all the Autonomous Communities participate and there are several hundred towns and cities that host the project.

There is also participation from other countries.

In Murcia, Smile Sarahaui coordinate air travel and joint activities.

These children come from the camps of the Saharawi refugee population in Tindouf (Algeria), where their families have been refugees for 43 years.

When Spain left the province of Western Sahara, Morocco invaded the territory, having to flee the Saharawi population to the current camps.

They are brought on those dates because the summer there is very hot and easily exceeds 50 degrees;

In this way, in addition to being in a milder climate, they have the opportunity to improve the precarious food they receive in the camps and charge the batteries to spend the rest of the year in the Sahara.

They also have medical check-ups to monitor their health status and solve any problems they may have (things that are easy to treat here and there, however, complicated, due to lack of materials and resources).

"But it also seems important to us its presence in Molina de Segura as ambassadors of the situation that the Saharaui people are going through, so that we do not forget our responsibility with what was the Spanish province until 1975 and for which we have not has carried out the decolonization process planned by the United Nations. We Spaniards have a pending debt with the Saharawis, "says the President of the Saharaui Smile Association, Juana Abenza.

About 70 families from the Region of Murcia will host about 77 children this summer, coming from the Wilaya de Dajla.

The objective is multiple: to compensate for the nutritional, environmental and health deficit that they suffer in the refugee camps of the Algerian desert and, on the other hand, to offer the families of our municipality the possibility of sharing an experience of solidarity and affection that fosters the interculturality and transmits values of equality and non-discrimination.

These days, an outreach campaign begins to capture and prepare host families.

Together with the City of Molina de Segura, the dissemination of posters and brochures begins throughout the municipality: in information panels, schools, social and health centers.

A calendar of informative and informative awareness talks by the schools (schools, institutes, etc.) of the municipality is also initiated.

A stand will be installed with information on different activities and concentrations that take place in the municipality, markets, etc.
