"Thermography in the diagnosis of Rare Diseases (23/02/2020)

The MAM Hospital Research Chair at UCAM has presented in the framework of the VI Regional Conference on Rare Diseases, held on Friday, February 21 - the progress made in the studies it is developing on "Thermography in the diagnosis of Rare Diseases. Advances in the investigation of the musculoskeletal system in Dreyfuss Syndrome "and" Surgical solutions to pathologies of the musculoskeletal system in the hand in Rare Diseases ".

Thus, Andrés Martínez-Almagro (Professor of Anatomy of the UCAM) and Alessio Cabizosu (researcher of the Research Chair Hospital de Molina of the UCAM), have presented the advances in the study of thermography as a diagnostic tool and evaluation of the Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy: "The thermographic technique is based on the measurement and quantification of body surface temperature and can become a novel diagnostic tool, presenting numerous advantages, such as the immediacy of results or non-invasiveness. Specifically, when applied to Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy - a type of dystrophy that primarily affects the skeletal and cardiac muscle - we have found temperature differences depending on the evolutionary phase of the disease in relation to the parameters age index of body mass " .

On the other hand, the deputy to the Unit of Superior Member of the Hospital of Molina and specialist in superior member, Pedro Sánchez Angulo, has explained that the conditions that are manifested in the hands in the so-called rare diseases are very diverse.

Depending on the type of disease and what elements it affects (collagen, muscle fibers, bone structure, etc.), the treatment of each one is different and always adapted to each individual case, depending on the pathology and the patient's expectations for your day to day, in order to improve your quality of life: "The treatment of these conditions is usually aimed at improving the functionality of the hand and we have as more prominent tools the use of joint arthrodesis, tendon transfers, arthroplasties with or without prostheses, nerve releases and sometimes a combination of several techniques depending on the pathology and the deformities to be treated. Therefore, it is a challenge for the hand surgery team since we not only try to solve the anatomical deformity, but to adapt the changes that we are going to make in the surgery to the expectations of the patients ".

The VI Regional Conference on Rare Diseases has been inaugurated by the Minister of Health of the Region of Murcia, Manuel Villegas García, the first Deputy Mayor of the City of Molina de Segura, Ángel Navarro, the Councilor for Sports and Health of the Molinense City Council , Miguel Ángel Cantero García, the President of FEDER and FEDER Foundation, Juan Carrión Tudela, and the Manager of the Molina Hospital, Pedro Hernández Jiménez.
