The Hospital de Molina begins its influenza and pneumococcal vaccination campaign for its staff (22/10/2020)

The Molina Hospital launches the flu vaccination campaign aimed at all the staff (health and non-health) of the Hospital Center.

In addition, hospital personnel over 60 years of age who join the flu vaccination must protect themselves against pneumococcus, if they have not done so previously; while those over 65 who received the pneumococcal in the 2013-2014 season, should receive this year a single and last booster dose. The objective of the campaign is to avoid complications derived from the flu, mainly in vulnerable people, to avoid co-infections of flu and coronavirus, and to avoid excessive overload on the health system, which already faces a very high demand for care due to the COVID19. The Medical Director of the Hospital de Molina, Eduardo Rodríguez de la Vega Espinosa, emphasizes the importance of the flu vaccine to face COVID19 during the autumn and winter months: "We cannot forget that people 65 years of age or older , chronic hospitalized patients, chronic patients and immunosuppressed patients (eg asthma, diabetes, etc.) are a high risk group for influenza-related complications or death.

Transmission of influenza between health workers and patients is a serious problem in health centers, since, on many occasions, health personnel themselves are a source of flu transmission: on the one hand, because health workers continue to work while they are sick with the flu; and on the other, because health workers are not vaccinated, although don't be sick, they can spread the virus.

" The epidemiology of influenza consists of: Highly communicable disease that is spread by coughing, sneezing, direct physical contact, and vomiting. The virus is transmissible 1 to 2 days before the onset of symptoms and about 5 days after the first symptoms under normal conditions. Approximately 50% of those infected have no symptoms, but they can still spread the disease.
